Creative Sustainability SolutionsThe Environmental Sustainability and Techno-Economic Assessment of a modern Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Combined Heat and Power (PEMFC CHP) system at the University of Nottingham focused on evaluating the viability of using this advanced technology for decentralized energy production. The project aimed to assess both the environmental benefits and economic feasibility of deploying PEMFC CHP systems, particularly in residential and industrial applications. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted in this study focused on the environmental sustainability of the PEMFC system, evaluating factors such as energy efficiency, carbon emissions, and resource use throughout the system's entire lifecycle. This included the production, installation, operation, and eventual decommissioning of the PEMFC system. The LCA aimed to compare the environmental impact of PEMFC systems with conventional energy generation systems, such as natural gas-fired power plants, to determine their relative benefits in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to sustainable energy goals. Additionally, the techno-economic assessment analyzed the cost-effectiveness and economic viability of the PEMFC CHP system. This assessment considered installation costs, operational expenses, fuel efficiency, and potential financial savings from heat and electricity generation. The goal was to evaluate whether PEMFC systems are economically competitive with other forms of combined heat and power (CHP) technologies and if they provide a practical, sustainable solution for the future energy needs of buildings and industries. The findings from this study demonstrated that PEMFC CHP systems could offer a promising alternative to traditional energy systems, delivering significant environmental and economic benefits, particularly when integrated into low-carbon, energy-efficient infrastructures.
